Welwitschia Day Trip

07:00

Depart from Swakopmund to the small town of Henties Bay. You will have a short stop at the Lichen Fields at Mile 30 south of Henties Bay. You may inspect these interesting organisms on foot - Please DO NOT TOUCH! If a little water is sprinkled on them, the come to life magically. Over a hundred species of lichen have been recorded in the Namib. They can be divided into three groups - foliose, fruticose and crustose.

08:00

Arrive at Henties Bay and proceed with a short tour of this little holiday town before continuing further onto Uis. Situated in the National West Coast Recreation Area, Henties Bay offers the nature lover an attractive albeit sensitive natural environment with diversified fauna and flora and many sites of interest.

08:30

Continue in the direction of Uis on the C35. Approximately 14 km south-west of Uis you will turn left onto the D2342 - also known as the Welwitschia highway. This curious plant, some species are estimated as much as 1 500 years old - is endemic to the Namib Desert and grow amongst the hills of the Messum Crater. Desert adapted game species seen on the desert plains and in the dry watercourses include steenbok, springbok, gemsbok and Hartman's mountain Zebra. Your destination is the 'Save the Rhino Trust Camp', where you will enjoy your lunch packs and relax before continuing on your journey.

14:00

Depart the camp and travel on the D2303 which you will follow until you reach the salt road again. Your next stop is the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, with a surrounding area of 60 kmē, was proclaimed in 1968 to protect the biggest and best known of the 23 colonies of Cape Fur Seals that breed along the coast of South Africa and Namibia. It was here that the Portuguese navigator, Diego Cao, on his second expedition to Africa south of the equator, planted a stone cross in 1486. Two replicas of this cross can be viewed at the site where the original one was erected. A small lichen reserve containing a relatively large variety of species can be viewed close by.

The Cape fur seal, Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus, is the largest of the world's nine fur-seal species.

From Cape Cross you will return to Swakopmund, via Henties Bay and arrival will be in the late afternoon at your hotel - approximately 18:00.
